Hello again! We really like to keep things rolling here at Bruneau and Co.; We’re always working to keep things running and keep the auctions coming! Lately, we have been diligently preparing for our upcoming Spring Fine & Decorative Arts Auction and let me tell you, we have a ton of fun things headed across the block, including five Sergio Bustamante sculptures, each more surreal than the next!

My personal favorite out of them all is a green fish with a human face, four eyes, two human arms, and four human legs carrying a bucket of water. What could possibly top that? Perhaps a piece titled “Illusionist Rabbit” would tickle your fancy with a surreal scene of a humanoid rabbit in a polychromatic outfit with many eyes standing over a second nude humanoid rabbit floating above a cloud. If those are too farfetched but you would like to own a work of Bustamante, we will also be offering a sweet mermaid with a tail made of yellow, purple, and orange flowers titled “Mermaid Bride.” There is a little something for everyone, whether you want a boy riding a caterpillar or a rhinoceros on ice skates, Bustamante’s whimsical sculptures encapsulate anything you could possibly dream of!

Sergio Bustamante originally studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara while also studying art, eventually working with local ceramicists, and opening his own studio, which is still in operation. Eventually, Bustamante began selling works to Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and Harrods with his pieces often inspired by his favorite childhood science fiction books and imagery from his native Mexico.

Some of Bustamante’s works were designed to be interactive. In Jalisco, Mexico along Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón, is one such work. Titled “In Search of Reason,” the sculpture depicts a large ladder overlooking the ocean with two figures climbing to the top and one to the bottom. Visitors to this installation are encouraged to climb and interact with the ladder. So, if you are a fan of Bustamante and need a vacation, this may not be such a bad deal! Or, if you visit the Guadalajara Zoo, you will also find his installations there as well. Bustamante’s works are dream-like and pleasing to look at, so be sure to check them out!
