Hello everyone! Long time no see! Did you all hear about our upcoming Ancient Objects and Curios Auction? We are entering an interesting and fun era with an auction dedicated to classical antiquities, Hindu & Buddhist art, fossils & natural history, ethnographic art, and Asian art! I can’t be more excited; I am a big fan of curiosities after all! Has it been fun handling the more eccentric items walking through our doors? Absolutely. Every opportunity is a learning opportunity, and there is a lot to learn from artifacts thousands or even millions of years old!

Some examples of what I’ve seen so far…

Let’s start with an Egyptian Late Period sandstone sunken relief (with legal provenance running back through the 1970’s) of a king? Or a Middle Kingdom black stone carving of a priest’s torso? If Egyptian isn’t your thing but you are into Asian arts, you’re in luck! There’s a Japanese Edo Period standing carved wood Buddha with an elaborate base, and a pair of Chinese Qing celadon and aubergine glazed opposing foo lion cachepots. If you’re looking for something more musical, there is a single owner collection of bells, including a gilt renaissance hand bell. If vintage fashion is more your style, there is even a beautiful pair of 16th-17th century solid silver and filigree rabbi shoes.

And yet, if none of those items spark your interest and you are looking for something a bit more eccentric and prehistoric, there is a large cave bear skull, a fully articulated Hyaenodon, and an array of other rare and fine fossils. We also have an array of ethnographic items ranging from African sculptures with Mathias Komor provenance, a medley of Native American art, and Pre-Columbian artifacts such as a janiform jaguar head bronze ritual knife – with provenance, of course!

This little blog only scratches the surface of what’s to come! If you are someone into natural sciences, fossil collection, and taxidermy I really think you will be a fan of our May 29th auction. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming catalog, and happy bidding!
